Why Canada Legalizes CBD?
Canada becomes the second country (after Uruguay) to legalize the use of marijuana (cannabis) for recreational purposes. The parliament passed the law on Tuesday with 52 votes to its favor. The prime minister, Justin Trudeau announced that legalizing the drug will cast away the youth’s attention from organized crime.
The drug will be made available for recreational sales in the autumn of this year. The bill states the growth allowances, distribution and sale of cannabis.
Uruguay was the first country to legalize the drug in 2013. Many states of the US have also voted for the drug.
The Story Behind
The Canadians reportedly spent 6 billion Canadian dollars on marijuana in 2015. According to the officials, this trend made the illegal sale of cannabis go high. The criminals sold the drug and pocketed the profit while the youth could get their hands on it easily. With this law in force, the permitted use of the drug will be in effect with legalized shops across the country selling it.
The Work Task
As promised by the liberal Primer Minister, the Canadians will be able to buy marijuana legally by autumn. Cannabis and cannabis oil will be available at many licensed places and retail locations. It will also be made available for online sale by government approved sellers. The Canadians will be allowed to home grow up to four marijuana plants.
The possession range (at a time) will be 30 grams (1 oz) by adults. The legal age set up (by the federal government) to buy and use the drug is 18, while some of the provinces have chosen 19.
Cannabis infused foods will also be made available for sale within a year. This will provide the government time to chalk out the legal list and regulations for those products.
It will come with strict health warnings, plain package and minimum branding. The restrictions also include promotions via sponsorships, youth or animals and endorsements by celebrities. Each province can regulate its own jurisdiction about the sale, usage area and other limits.
What is Still Illegal?
• Possession of more than 30 grams in public
• More than 4 home grown plants
• Buying it from unlicensed dealers
Penalties
The unlicensed dealers can serve up to 14 years in jail for selling the drug.
Health Benefits
The health benefits trail up to 3000 years back. The lack of scientific knowledge and proof has been the reason behind the ban on the drug for medicinal purposes. It has been shown to be effective in epileptic patients. Moreover, cannabis oil has shown widespread benefit in the treatment of many other ailments. Some are listed below:-
• Chronic pain
• Drug addiction
• Alcoholism
• Depression and stress
• Cancer
• Multiple sclerosis
Every province has been given a timeframe of 8 to 12 weeks to set up a legal marketplace for the drug. The government is waiting on the royal assent for the drug, which is due this week, after which an official law enforcement date will be announced.
